Moving With Pets: The Complete Checklist
Everything you need for a low-stress move with your dog, cat, or small pet.
2 weeks before
- Update microchip registration and ID tags with new address
- Vet check-up — get a copy of records (required for interstate moves)
- Refill all prescriptions for at least 30 days
- Research vets, dog parks, and 24-hour animal hospitals in the new area
- For cats: start leaving the carrier out with treats inside
1 week before
- Pack a 3-day pet go-bag: food, water, meds, poop bags, litter, familiar bedding, favorite toy, leash
- Take a photo of each pet (in case they escape)
- Confirm pet policy at new home / HOA / apartment
Day of the move
- Keep pets in ONE closed room or with a friend/boarding — the front door will be open for hours
- Feed lightly to prevent car sickness
- NEVER leave a pet in a parked car in Florida — 5 minutes can be fatal
- Transport pets in your own car, not the moving truck
First 72 hours in the new home
- Set up a "safe room" with all supplies before letting them explore
- Cats: confine to one room for 3–5 days minimum
- Dogs: leash-walk the yard, don't let them off-leash for 2 weeks
- Stick to their usual feeding and walk schedule
Frequently asked
How do I move with a dog or cat long distance?
Update their microchip and ID tag with your new address BEFORE moving day. Pack a 3-day 'pet go-bag' (food, meds, familiar bedding, favorite toy). Never leave pets in a hot vehicle — even 10 minutes in a Florida summer car is dangerous.
Should I sedate my pet on moving day?
Only if your vet prescribes it. Most vets recommend a Feliway/Adaptil calming spray instead. Never give human medication.
How long should I keep a cat confined after moving?
Keep cats in ONE room with all their supplies for at least 3–5 days. Let them explore the rest of the house gradually. Never let them outside for at least 2 weeks.
Can I ship my pet's crate with the movers?
Yes, but pack it into the truck LAST so it comes out FIRST — you'll want it set up before your pet arrives at the new place.
